Named Track & Field Athletes of the Year .

Jamaica’s track and field superstar Usain Bolt and Jamaican born US 400m runner Sanya Richards are Track and Field News male and female Athlete of the Year for 2009. Both were similarly honoured in November by Track and Fields’ world governing body the IAAF. Bolt for the second year in a row topped the poll with a perfect score from 32 track and field panelist. Richards had 89.1 percent score with 16 first places. Before Bolt came along only Henry Rono in 1978 and Michael Johnson in 1996 had ever been accorded perfect scores on the mens’ side. Distance king, Ethiopian, Kenenisa Bekele 268 placed second behind Bolt in the poll ahead of Berlin World Championship 100m silver medal winner, Tyson Gay 218. Richards won the women’s vote ahead of Blanka Vlasic with World Championship 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker at number 9.
